What to Engrave on a Watch: Ideas for Every Occasion
For a Wedding
A wedding watch is meant to last longer than the day itself. Keep the engraving simple enough that it still holds meaning decades from now.
- The wedding date:
October 11, 2026 - Initials of both partners:
S & J - A short phrase that means something to you both
- The place you got engaged, or where you first met
If you're giving wooden watches as wedding gifts, matching engravings across the set — same date, same initials — make for a moment when they're unwrapped together.
For Groomsmen
Groomsmen watches are one of our most popular gift categories, and the engraving is usually what makes them feel like more than a gift — it makes them a keepsake.
Best Man · October 2026- Each groomsman's name on the back of their own watch
- A short thank-you:
Thanks for standing by me - The groom's initials alongside the wedding date
Keeping it consistent across the group — same wood, same engraving — looks striking when everyone's wearing them at the ceremony.

For a Birthday
A milestone birthday deserves something that marks it. Engraving doesn't need to be sentimental to be meaningful.
- The birth year:
2002 - Their age and year:
24 · 2026 - A line that captures something about who they are
- Coordinates of a place that matters to them
The back of a watch is a quiet place. Whatever you put there, only they'll know it's there.

For an Anniversary
Time is built into the object itself — a handcrafted wooden watch that will last. Let the engraving acknowledge that.
- The anniversary year:
25 Years - The date you met, not just the wedding date
- A short phrase from a song, a letter, or something you've said a hundred times
- Simply: their name, and yours
Our anniversary watches are made from sustainably sourced hardwood, and free engraving is included on every style.

For a Corporate Gift
When giving a watch on behalf of a company, the engraving is usually brief and professional — but still personal enough to feel considered.
- Company name + a milestone year:
Tense · Since 1971 - The recipient's name and title
- A short phrase that reflects your company's values
- Years of service:
20 Years · Thank you
A name engraved on the back of a watch says something a trophy on a shelf doesn't. It goes with them.

A Few Rules for Getting It Right
Keep it short. The engraving area on most watches fits two to three short lines comfortably. The shorter the phrase, the more clearly it reads — and the longer it lasts in memory.
Copy exactly. Engraving is permanent, so we reproduce whatever you type, character for character. Double-check spelling, capitalisation, and punctuation before you submit.
Think about ten years from now. Inside jokes fade. Dates don't. Names don't. A line that captures something essential about the relationship — not just the moment — tends to age well.
Engraving is always free at Tense. There's no minimum, no extra step. Just enter your text at checkout.
